what is CBD?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound found in both the cannabis and hemp plant. Because CBD can come from two different plant sources, it is important to know which CBD plant you are buying and the difference between the two. The main difference is THC. Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the compound that gives marijuana its psychoactive properties. Our product contains < 0.3% THC and all of our CBD products are derived from hemp.

Understanding what CBD can do for your pet’s wellness is easier if you know what CBD is and how it is used. Cannabinoids (CBD) molecules interact with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) present in humans and pets (and other animals), which is tied to nearly every other body system like the nervous system, immune system, circulatory system, digestive system, etc. The ECS is responsible for many aspects of normal, healthy functioning of these different body systems. CBD improves the function of the naturally produced endocannabinoids already circulating in our pets’ bodies, and also mimics other important naturally produced signaling molecules like serotonin. There have been clinical trials demonstrating some of the benefits of CBD at a few veterinary colleges, including Cornell and the University of Florida, where our founding veterinarians, Dr. Katie Green and Dr. Kyra Marsigliano, were trained.

What Are the Side Effects of CBD?
CBD is generally well tolerated by dogs and cats, with minimal side effects seen. Occasionally, mild, transient diarrhea or sedation may occur, more commonly when starting CBD. Some pets who are sensitive to bitter flavors may experience transient hypersalivation that goes away after a few minutes.

CBD can cause mild, transient elevations in a particular liver enzyme that is not associated with disease or dysfunction, so it is important to ensure your veterinarian is aware of any CBD your pet is taking. Additionally, CBD can interact with certain medications (similar to how humans on certain medications need to be careful when eating grapefruit) by affecting their levels in the blood (either increasing or decreasing them), so this is another reason to always let your veterinarian know if you are administering CBD. If your veterinarian is unsure about CBD’s interactions with the drugs your pet is on, they can contact one of our veterinarians for a complimentary consult.
cbd sheets - How many sheets should my pet take?
SimpliSolve sheets have CBD and other important hemp extract components evenly distributed throughout each sheet. The sheets are just slightly bigger than 1 square inch. They can be easily folded and ripped into an appropriate size for your pet, based on their weight, for easy administration.

For pets up to 20 lbs, we recommend giving 1/4 of a sheet twice daily. For 21-50 lb pets, one-half sheet is recommended. And pets over 50 lbs tend to benefit from a full sheet twice daily.

Of course, this guideline is based on what SimpliSolve users have found helpful, but some pets may require more or less than generally recommended based on the functioning of their individual endocannabinoid system.

things to consider When Buying CBD?
If you and your veterinarian decide that you should try CBD for your pet, there are a few things to keep in mind when purchasing CBD. Not all products are the same; you’ll want good-quality CBD to have a better chance of it working.

Look for Organic or Natural Ingredients. If the CBD oil is not organic, it at least should not contain pesticides, fungicides, or solvents.

Don’t Shop Based on Price. Price is not always the best indication of quality. There are plenty of options that could contain toxic substances such as pesticides, herbicides, or heavy metals. Make sure to check the COAs for any product you are considering to make sure you are getting the best product for your pet.

Certificate of Analysis. Look for a company that provides their Certificate of Analysis. Certificates of Analysis gives you the comfort of knowing exactly what is in the product you are purchasing. Companies that don’t provide these full analyses for every batch may be hiding something. Their product may have a significantly lower concentration of CBD than what they claim on the bag or bottle. It may be contaminated with something that could make your pet sick. In some cases, it may not contain any beneficial cannabinoids at all, and you could be pouring money down the drain.
